Mystic Krewe of Mutts Dog Parade

This is the best-loved Mardi Gras event in the Baton Rouge area. It is sponsored by CAAWS, which is the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society of Baton Rouge. This is their 9th annual Dog Parade and it is great, family-friendly entertainment. The event helps to raise funds for a great CAAWS.

The 2008 theme is Viva Paws Vegas, What Happens in the Kennel, STAYS in the Kennel

The parade will wag and bark its way down North Boulevard on Sunday, January 27 starting at 1:30pm. You will get to see dogs dressed in some very creative attire and even their owners will usually be dressed to match.

One of the big sponsors of the parade is
Raising CANES. We love Cane's and Todd is from Baton Rouge, so that makes it all the better.

Come out for a good CAAWS and enjoy the fun!

It's Friday

So glad it is Friday. The weather is a bit chilly and damp, but it doesn't matter because it is Friday and I love Friday's.

The pups are staying busy playing and trying to get attention from me. Of course I stop what I am doing (about 40 times a day) and give them undivided attention. They are so spoiled that it really is ridiculous. They think they are human and they expect to be treated like humans.

I have found 4 more teeth on the floor from Maggie. This is just cracking me up, because this is a first for me. I have had several dogs in my life, but have never found teeth on the floor. The tooth fairy has been busy this week.

The Mardi Gras parades are rolling this weekend in Baton Rouge and that's where we will be. My daughter is a middle school cheerleader and she has to march. I thought it would be fun to march with her so I volunteered. That was before I knew the high tomorrow is only 50 degrees. Guess I'll brave the wintry environment and get some much needed exercise. We will be in the Krewe of Orion night parade. We might get lucky and make it on television.

Artic Dogs

Ok, my dogs are just too funny! It was in the 20's this morning and the grass had ice on it. I think it scared my dogs. They heard the "crunch" when they stepped on it and took off running back to the house. Louisiana dogs just don't know how to react to this cold weather. Maybe I could get them some little parkas and snow shoes. I'm getting a visual...and it's too funny!

I am training my younger ratty and when it's cold outside, it makes it a little harder to do. She just doesn't want to have any part of the cold, cruel back yard. I really don't blame her, but it is not helping the training plan.

My older ratty does not want to get out of my bed in the morning. It is just too cold for her and she looks at me like I am with wicked witch of the west. She is perfectly happy lounging all day in the bed or in front of the fireplace.

I've come to the conclusion that Dogs are really smart and just think what it would be like if they could talk.

Tooth Fairy for Dogs

Ok, this is a first for me. Maggie, which is 4 months old, lost a jaw tooth today. I have never seen a dog's tooth laying on the floor before. It was a rather large jaw tooth. But, it didn't seem to bother her much, as she just kept on chewing on her rawhide.

I was a little shocked because I was not aware of this happening. I called the veterinarian and she said that was normal. That puppies do start to lose teeth at around 3-4 months old. Also, this is to blame for her foul smelling breath lately. The doctor said the teeth will get loose and bleed and this causes the odor. This is news to me!

So, the question is....Will the tooth fairy be visiting tonight. Shall I leave the tooth under her blanket? How much will she get? Hmmmm

Jada & her Playmate

Jada has a new playmate and her name is Maggie. Jada & Maggie have decided to team up on tearing apart my hot tub cover. I am not happy about this! Should I make them get jobs to pay for the repairs? Maybe they can get paid to walk some humans or something!

I have punished both of them and they just don't get it! Usually a rat terrier is easily trained; however, they really think tearing apart my cover is really fun and exciting! So, today I did what I should have done in the beginning. I have removed all access to the hot tub. Jada may be able to still jump on it but Maggie (and her short legs) don't have a chance. Ha, I showed them!

Now for my plants, that's another story. All my pretty pansies that I worked hard on planting in the early fall have now all been partly unearthed. Poor little roots are being ravaged by the early morning frost. I have become a "daily" gardener. I have to re-plant my pansies just about every day.

So, if you can get a visual on this....I have partly unearthed landscaping and a ripped up hot tub cover; but I still love them and they are fully aware of it;)

If you are planning on getting a playmate for your precious pup, you may need to dog-proof your yard and your house for that matter!

Just a Lazy Sunday

I actually got sleep last night. Yeah! Jada must have been very tired because she didn't move around in the bed very much. I am so happy! Shame I get so happy over such a trivial thing. It's Sunday and still a little chilly out so I think we'll just hang in the house today and watch a good movie. I am going to the market sometime today to get a few fresh vegetables. I decided last night that it was time to start that New Year's resolution of getting our diets in check.

Last night, we watched Meet the Fockers. That is one funny movie. I say "we" watched the movie; everyone (including the dogs) fell asleep, so I guess "I" watched the movie. Oh, and before that I watched Overboard twice. That is one of my favorite movies. Goldie Hawn is so funny and I love when she and Kurt Russell are in movies together.

Everyone have a great Sunday; I'm headed to the market.

Can Dogs Be Friends?

Now I have to wonder if dogs can really be friends.

I have had Jada for 7 months and she is very attached to me. Now we have this new baby rat terrier in our house and, at first, Jada seemed to like her and kind of treated her as a play toy. I thought it was really cute.

Three weeks have passed and Jada seems to not care for Maggie too much these days. She has been biting at her and playing really rough. Maggie is starting to show nervousness when Jada comes charging at her. This is not the way it is supposed to be! I was hoping that we could just all get along.

Jada still sleeps with me every night and Maggie sleeps in her room. Shouldn't that be enough to prove to Jada that she is my number 1 dog? I love Maggie too and they really need to learn that I have enough love for both of them.

What does an owner do? Should I just move out?

The Bedtime Blues

Ok, somethings got to give. My terrier, Jada, takes up more than her share of the bed. She has long legs and, of course, she likes to sleep stretched out. She wakes me up so many times at night that I feel like a zombie during the day.

I am thinking about putting her in a dog crate at night. I know she loves me so much and enjoys being close, but I think it would do us both a favor if she sleeps in a crate. Maybe I can decorate it like Paris Hilton's bedroom and then she will feel comfortable in it. I will need to get a pretty pink dog bed with sparkles on it and maybe get her one of those sound machines to play soft music. ha ha

Now I have gone too far! She's a dog for crying out loud. Can't she just sleep outside or something?

I don't know what else to do at night to keep her out of my bed. It seems that they start sleeping in the bed as soon as they know how to jump up in the bed. I never gave her permission to do it, she just took it upon herself to make that decision.

If anyone has any suggestions, please comment. I don't want her to get upset and think I don't love her, I just want to get some sleep.

Dog Toys

I would not want to be a dog toy! By the looks of some that I have, they really get abused. My rat terriers play tug-of-war with a rope toy and it is really funny. They pull so hard that I am just waiting for teeth to start flying.

I have found one toy that is really tough, it is called The Kong
. That thing is indestructible. They have different sizes too. I have the small one and it is designed to where you can put a treat inside of it and it will drive your dog nuts trying to get to the treat. It does make a great babysitter.

Until tomorrow,
Cheers

Where Do Dogs Go When It Rains?

OK, dogs do not like when it rains!

They can't get out and play or potty for that matter. They stay inside and drive their owner crazy. It's like every five minutes they are begging for something, whether it be food, toys or attention. Probably just attention:)

So where exactly are dogs supposed to potty when it rains? I have to toss them into the grass from the patio so I don't get all wet. Then they just come running back under the patio with me. So, I need to figure out a solution because it rains alot in Louisiana.

We did make it through the day with only a couple of accidents on the kitchen floor. So I guess I will let them cuddle with me tonight.

Cheers!

The Vet Visit - Dog Vaccinations

Today, I had to bring my precious pups to the "doggie doc" for a check-up. Jada is my oldest Rat Terrier and she does not really care for the doggie doc. She gets so nervous and wants to run around the waiting room. She had to get some stuff sprayed up her nose and wasn't really thrilled about the experience.

Now my little one, that's Maggie, she is so cute and today was her first "doggie doc" visit. She did not know what to expect so she handled it fairly well. She had to get her first shots and worm job. You know they just don't like that!

They survived their visit and was none to shy about exiting the place.

Doc is happy, I am happy, Pups are resting! Whew, what a day!

Rat Terriers

Rat Terriers are the best dogs in the world. I really love them. I will never have any other type of dog! Ever!

They have so much personality and love being close to you. Talk about a great companion. They are like shadows that pop up everywhere you go. Even to the restroom; there they come, right behind you.

We have two female Rat Terriers named Jada and Maggie. Both are great dogs and are very much a part of our lives.
