Partners in Crime

Partners in Crime

Jada and Maggie have become partners in crime. They manage to team up on whatever they set out to destroy. Like my beautiful rug that lay quietly in our family room. The rug doesn't bother anyone. Why did it deserve to have it's corners eaten off by two rat terriers? Now my beautiful rug had to be donated to the recycle bin.

They have been very entertaining lately and they find themselves in the time-out kennel quite often.

What's a pet owner to do?

Gardening Dogs

Yes, I have two gardening dogs. They help me a great deal in the yard. They move plants for me, they sift dirt for me and the fertilize the grass. Such a great help...NOT!

I love my dogs a great deal; however, I could go through life just fine without the their help in the garden. Maggie has destroyed most of my pretty pansies and dug 8 inch holes in a few places. I found my caladium bulbs completely out of the ground and being used as balls, being tossed around all over the yard. Oh, and one of the square pots that I had full of pansies is now being used as a soft bed of dirt for Maggie. She curls up in the planter and gets real comfy and takes a nap.

What is a pet owner to do?

I spent much of the Mardi Gras holiday trying to put my pretty landscaping back together. I replanted a few pansies, threw away my poor caladium bulbs and emptied and moved the planter, a.k.a.dirt bed. The dogs looked quite confused. Now what will they do to occupy their time?

Well, at least the yard looks nice for the time being. I am sure Maggie and Jada will come up with something to do just as interesting as being doggie gardeners.

Mystic Krewe of Mutts Dog Parade

This is the best-loved Mardi Gras event in the Baton Rouge area. It is sponsored by CAAWS, which is the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society of Baton Rouge. This is their 9th annual Dog Parade and it is great, family-friendly entertainment. The event helps to raise funds for a great CAAWS.

The 2008 theme is Viva Paws Vegas, What Happens in the Kennel, STAYS in the Kennel

The parade will wag and bark its way down North Boulevard on Sunday, January 27 starting at 1:30pm. You will get to see dogs dressed in some very creative attire and even their owners will usually be dressed to match.

One of the big sponsors of the parade is
Raising CANES. We love Cane's and Todd is from Baton Rouge, so that makes it all the better.

Come out for a good CAAWS and enjoy the fun!

It's Friday

So glad it is Friday. The weather is a bit chilly and damp, but it doesn't matter because it is Friday and I love Friday's.

The pups are staying busy playing and trying to get attention from me. Of course I stop what I am doing (about 40 times a day) and give them undivided attention. They are so spoiled that it really is ridiculous. They think they are human and they expect to be treated like humans.

I have found 4 more teeth on the floor from Maggie. This is just cracking me up, because this is a first for me. I have had several dogs in my life, but have never found teeth on the floor. The tooth fairy has been busy this week.

The Mardi Gras parades are rolling this weekend in Baton Rouge and that's where we will be. My daughter is a middle school cheerleader and she has to march. I thought it would be fun to march with her so I volunteered. That was before I knew the high tomorrow is only 50 degrees. Guess I'll brave the wintry environment and get some much needed exercise. We will be in the Krewe of Orion night parade. We might get lucky and make it on television.

Artic Dogs

Ok, my dogs are just too funny! It was in the 20's this morning and the grass had ice on it. I think it scared my dogs. They heard the "crunch" when they stepped on it and took off running back to the house. Louisiana dogs just don't know how to react to this cold weather. Maybe I could get them some little parkas and snow shoes. I'm getting a visual...and it's too funny!

I am training my younger ratty and when it's cold outside, it makes it a little harder to do. She just doesn't want to have any part of the cold, cruel back yard. I really don't blame her, but it is not helping the training plan.

My older ratty does not want to get out of my bed in the morning. It is just too cold for her and she looks at me like I am with wicked witch of the west. She is perfectly happy lounging all day in the bed or in front of the fireplace.

I've come to the conclusion that Dogs are really smart and just think what it would be like if they could talk.

Tooth Fairy for Dogs

Ok, this is a first for me. Maggie, which is 4 months old, lost a jaw tooth today. I have never seen a dog's tooth laying on the floor before. It was a rather large jaw tooth. But, it didn't seem to bother her much, as she just kept on chewing on her rawhide.

I was a little shocked because I was not aware of this happening. I called the veterinarian and she said that was normal. That puppies do start to lose teeth at around 3-4 months old. Also, this is to blame for her foul smelling breath lately. The doctor said the teeth will get loose and bleed and this causes the odor. This is news to me!

So, the question is....Will the tooth fairy be visiting tonight. Shall I leave the tooth under her blanket? How much will she get? Hmmmm

Jada & her Playmate

Jada has a new playmate and her name is Maggie. Jada & Maggie have decided to team up on tearing apart my hot tub cover. I am not happy about this! Should I make them get jobs to pay for the repairs? Maybe they can get paid to walk some humans or something!

I have punished both of them and they just don't get it! Usually a rat terrier is easily trained; however, they really think tearing apart my cover is really fun and exciting! So, today I did what I should have done in the beginning. I have removed all access to the hot tub. Jada may be able to still jump on it but Maggie (and her short legs) don't have a chance. Ha, I showed them!

Now for my plants, that's another story. All my pretty pansies that I worked hard on planting in the early fall have now all been partly unearthed. Poor little roots are being ravaged by the early morning frost. I have become a "daily" gardener. I have to re-plant my pansies just about every day.

So, if you can get a visual on this....I have partly unearthed landscaping and a ripped up hot tub cover; but I still love them and they are fully aware of it;)

If you are planning on getting a playmate for your precious pup, you may need to dog-proof your yard and your house for that matter!

Just a Lazy Sunday

I actually got sleep last night. Yeah! Jada must have been very tired because she didn't move around in the bed very much. I am so happy! Shame I get so happy over such a trivial thing. It's Sunday and still a little chilly out so I think we'll just hang in the house today and watch a good movie. I am going to the market sometime today to get a few fresh vegetables. I decided last night that it was time to start that New Year's resolution of getting our diets in check.

Last night, we watched Meet the Fockers. That is one funny movie. I say "we" watched the movie; everyone (including the dogs) fell asleep, so I guess "I" watched the movie. Oh, and before that I watched Overboard twice. That is one of my favorite movies. Goldie Hawn is so funny and I love when she and Kurt Russell are in movies together.

Everyone have a great Sunday; I'm headed to the market.
